Although garage remodeling contractors generally know how to undertake a project with ease and proficiency, there are things you can do yourself to assist in the transition as well. Continue reading to learn what you need to know about prepping for your upcoming garage remodel, and help get your project started on the right foot!
Clear the Way
Before your remodeling contractors arrive to start your garage renovation, it helps to clear the way. Working in a clear space allows for better work efficiency and reduces obstacles that can affect the process of the remodel. Clearing the way is more than just making space, however. It involves everything from cleaning and organizing, to eliminating, rearranging, and replacing. Start by giving your garage a thorough cleaning. Sweep all the trash, leaves, and debris from the floor, and if you choose to, you can even power wash the surface afterwards.
Get everything neatly arranged on your shelves, trashing anything that is no longer wanted or used. Take this opportunity to make more space for new items after your remodel is complete. Replace any mats or latches or handles that are permanent parts of your garage, and be sure there are no hazards looming in disguise that could harm a contractor or yourself (i.e. exposed nail beds, faulty circuits, water leaks, etc.).Last, you must clear all items out of the way in the space the contractors will be working in, including lawn equipment, shelving, boxes, vehicles, storage, and more. You will need to find temporary space elsewhere on or inside your property until they can be moved back after the remodel. This will make the remodel faster and more efficient, and even save you money on extra labor costs.
Pave the Way
When it comes to garage remodels, generally there are outdoor points of entry that the contractors will use to come and go through. However, depending on individual circumstances, remodeling contractors will need access to certain areas of your home. This is especially true if there is not outdoor point of entry for the garage except for the main drop door. For this reason, it is helpful to plan ahead by making a designated route for the contractors, and perhaps lay down extra door mats, tarps, and old bed sheets to protect your flooring. While you’re at it, designate an area in or outside of the home where the contractors are permitted to leave their tools and materials behind during the project.
