Now is Still as Good a Time as Ever

Prime exterior painting season varies from state to state because it mostly depends on climate. Here in Indiana, most painting jobs are performed between the months of May and August, when temperatures are warm and precipitation is low. In conditions like these, paint cures much faster. In fact, for a long time, paint manufacturers recommended to perform jobs in temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, which would usually extend the painting timeline to September. However, new innovative paint technology now allows us to paint homes even later in the year.

Innovative Paint Technologies

Such products are formulated to be applied in weather as cold as 35 degrees Fahrenheit! This means that you still have time to have your home painted this year! Generally, temperatures will drop lower than this around the end of November, which gives you a little more time to have your home or property painted. This is especially good news for those who have just purchased a property, and need a good “sprucing up” before moving in or opening for business.

How to Find the Right Paint

Only certain exterior paint products are specially formulated to be applied in cooler climates, making it quite important to choose the right ones for the job. Fortunately, this is not your job. A professional painting contractor will have all the resources needed to select and acquire such products. Leave it to them to choose the right paint for your property. Just be sure to choose a dependable Indianapolis exterior painting contractor who has decades of experience in the industry.

How to Solve a Door Slamming Problem

Aside from teens experiencing the occasional mood swing, doors that are prone to slamming may be caused by something easily fixable. Whether it’s a hinge defect or interior shifts of air, door slamming problems can quickly become a thing of the past for your home with a few simple tips.

What’s Causing the Force?

Have you ever seen a door slam shut for no apparent reason? Well, it’s nothing to fear; there are several reasons why doors are prone to slamming when left open. The most common reason has to do with pressure changes in areas near the door. Pressure changes occur when air moves from an area with high pressure, to an area with low pressure. For instance, a window left open in the next room can cause an open door to slam shut. Other reasons for slamming doors include faulty hinges and structural unevenness, both of which are repairable.

Hinges and Framing

Start off by checking the door itself. When door hinges are worn down or not installed properly, they can cause a door to be more prone to swinging and slamming. See if the hinges are even, flat against the frame, and screwed in tightly. If the hinge is loose, simply tighten the screws back up with a screw driver.

If the hinges are not the problem, take a look at the actual door. Doors that are not perfectly vertical are not evenly balanced in weight. This can cause it to slam shut at the slightest touch or draft. The best way to fix an unbalanced door is to replace it with a new one. Check with your local home improvement store to see what your purchasing options are near you.

Air Pressure and Cross Breezes

If the hinges and door are not the culprit to the frequent slamming, it is likely just the way the air flows and changes pressure through your home. In this case, you can try to implement some strategies to reduce the force of the shutting, or eliminate it all together. Here are some effective and affordable ideas:

Use Door Stoppers – A simple floor wedge will do the trick. When you have a window or screen door open in the house, just slide one underneath to prevent sudden slamming.

Use Felt Pads – Self-stick felt pads provide cushioning and reduce the force of door slamming. Place a pad at the bottom, top, and both sides of the frame for best results.

Install Weather Stripping – Just like felt pads, weather stripping will add cushioning, thus reducing the force and sound of the slamming action. This is recommended for heavier doors.

Install a Pneumatic Closer – If nothing seems to work, you can install a pneumatic closer. These are small air-powered devices that slow down the swing of a closing door.

There are several ways you can qualify for more tax deductions and rebates, and they all involve your home! As a homeowner, you can qualify for specific tax credits this year by making changes to the interior and exterior of your house or property. Roofing, appliances, electronics, remodels, space conversions, lighting, and renewable energy sources are just the start of the possibilities!

Tax Credits

Tax credits are regulated and set by the government, and intended to entice home owners to make improvements that conserve energy. Local, state, and federal tax credits exist for those who qualify, and are claimed during income tax season.

For instance, if you have your roof replaced with an Energy Star-certified material, such as asphalt shingles, you could receive a tax credit of 10% of the cost, up to $500. Or by adding an office space to your home, you could also qualify for certain tax deductions, as well as, certain manufacturer rebates on office furniture and equipment.

A Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit is available for homeowners who remodel areas of their property with solar power, such as solar paneling for roofs, wind turbines, geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, and more. To discover which tax credits are available to you, go to the U.S. Department of Energy website.

Rebates

If you install an energy-efficient appliance that is administered through a local utility company or an appliance manufacturer that works alongside the U.S. Energy Star program, you could receive a rebate from either party. Some local power companies have been known to offer rebates as high as $500 or $600 for Energy Star-certified installations. Appliances must be Energy Star-Certified in order to be eligible for the rebate.

Examples of appliances that make Energy Star-certified models include HVAC systems, home electronics, lighting, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washing machines, dehumidifiers, and air purifiers. Home improvement rebates may also be available for projects like windows, doors, skylights, insulation. To learn if you qualify for any rebates, go to the Energy Star website.
