Siding for homes and buildings is specially manufactured to endure the outdoor elements and affects. This means they require less routine maintenance and upkeep compared to other areas on your property. But less maintenance doesn’t mean zero maintenance. There are still a few effective and preventative tasks you can do as a homeowner to protect and lengthen the life of your siding. Continue reading for tips regarding vinyl and wood siding maintenance and more!

Wood Siding Maintenance

Wood siding is more prone to wear and tear due to its organic qualities, especially if it is not properly sealed. Wood siding should be serviced once per year, and more so for homes and properties in harsher-changing climates (i.e. mountain states). Depending on the type of siding you have, this process can involve chemical treatment, power washing, gutter clearing, foliage removal, tree trimming or pruning, and more.

During this time, it is best to have any cracks, rotted wood, loose sheathing, or warped boards repaired as well. Holes and cracks in wood siding lets in pests and moisture, accelerating the rate of wear and tear. The type of repair needed will largely depend on the type of siding you own, but in most cases, wood siding repair is fairly simple, quick, and affordable. All siding maintenance and repair should be carried out by a licensed and experienced professional.

Vinyl Siding Maintenance

Vinyl siding requires even less routine maintenance than wood siding, if none at all! The most important aspect of vinyl siding maintenance is to repair loose or fallen boards right away. Wind and other elements can damage the loose board, misshaping, breaking, or bending it. In this case, the entire piece would need replaced, but it is much easier to simple nail a loose board back in as soon as you notice it.

Besides staying on top of needed repairs, it is strongly encouraged to have your vinyl siding professionally power washed on an annual basis. Spring is a great time to do this because siding generally accumulate dirt, dead insects, rotting leaf residues, and other wind-blown fragments over the course of fall and winter. And who doesn’t want a nice sparkling house to show off in the summer sunshine?

Options for Eco-Friendly Home Siding

Choosing an eco-friendly home siding can be a bit tricky considering there hasn’t been an official or significant introduction of such materials to the home construction market.

Although there aren’t options for advertised eco-friendly siding materials, there are a few choices available that are more environmentally conscience than others.

Continue reading to learn more about home siding, and which options are best for an environmentally-friendly agenda.

Stucco Siding

Stucco can be considered a slightly environmentally-conscience option for home siding. Apart from the wire mesh and thin wood spacers, stucco siding is primarily made of cement, plaster, and water; all of which have no harmful effects on the environment, and can be reused for other purposes. Stucco promotes increased energy efficiency and requires little maintenance. It’s also fire resistant!

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is made from non-recycled plastic material, but this doesn’t mean it does possess eco-friendly qualities. Vinyl siding is a durable, solid plastic that requires very little maintenance and lasts for several decades. It doesn’t require thousands of trees to be cut down and it doesn’t leak harmful gases or chemicals into the environment.

Metal Siding

Metal siding is generally manufactured using galvanized steel or aluminum. Both of these metals are 100% recyclable and reusable for other purposes. Although steel is prone to corrosion and natural wear and tear, it requires a bit more maintenance but it’s an eco-friendly-forward choice for home siding.

Wood Siding

Although wood is a natural material that decomposes and doesn’t harm the environment, it is not a good “green” choice for home siding. Wood requires the use of harmful chemicals and cleaners to maintain its luster and strength. These cleaners and chemicals are very hazardous for the eco-system and surrounding environment. Also, many trees are cut down to produce wood siding and other commodities, which is not an eco-friendly venture.
