What You Need to Repair Concrete Cracks

The most common and recommended products for repairing concrete cracks include vinyl concrete patchers, concrete patching compounds, polymer modified structural repair fillers, and advanced polymer concrete crack sealants. You can find all of these products online or at your local home improvement store. There are many brands to choose from, but a popular choice for all is Quikrete. Always be sure to clean concrete thoroughly and remove any debris prior to applying any of these products.

Working and Non-Working Cracks

Before you start applying products all over the place, you must first identify the type of cracks you are repairing. Concrete cracks are either working cracks or non-working cracks, which are also referred to as moving and non-moving.

Working Cracks in Concrete – Working cracks form deep and wide, or have one side that is taller than the other. These cracks continue to grow larger and threaten other nearby structures. To repair working cracks, apply an advanced polymer concrete crack sealant.

Non-Working Cracks in Concrete – Non-working cracks do not change, nor seem to pose a threat to any nearby structures. They appear in the form of thin, shallow crevices in pavement. If a non-working crack is more than a ½ inch in depth, use a polymer modified structural repair filler.

Other Types of Concrete Damage

Aside from working and non-working cracks, it is important to identify any other types of concrete damage before getting started with your repairs. Look for shallow divots or chips, as these will require a different type of concrete repair product than moving and non-moving cracks. In fact, to repair these kinds of trivial concrete damages, you will need to use a vinyl concrete patcher or patching compound. You will also need a trowel to apply these products smoothly.

Low Maintenance and Longevity

Stamped concrete is well-known for its ease of care. Concrete does not require a lot of routine maintenance, and does not require periodic overlays like asphalt pavement would. Instead, a little regular sweeping and routine sealcoating is all you need to keep your stamped concrete in good condition. You would need to hire a professional concrete contractor to have your pavement re-sealed, but this only needs to happen every 3 to 5 years, depending on the climate and surrounding environmental conditions. This level of maintenance is all it takes to extend the life of your concrete surface for years to come.

Ease of Installation

Another wonderful aspect of stamped concrete is the simplicity of installation. Of course, it requires professional training, years of experience, and the proper equipment to install stamped concrete properly; but for the professionals who have these credentials, the job is quick and simple. This means you won’t be subjected to long, drawn out days filled with construction and loads of scrap mess. The project is usually completed all in one day unless it is a wide-scale commercial job. Stamping out a pattern into curing concrete is much easier and faster than carrying individual paving stones, one by one, and setting them in place.

Property Value Benefits

One of the most favored benefits of adding stamped concrete to your property is the value it adds to your investment. Beautifully stamped concrete foundations, counter tops, floors, driveways, hardscapes, and more are all assets that add instant appeal, which also instantly raises a property’s overall value. So not only is it a terrific feature to add to your home for your own enjoyment, it maximizes the return on your investment in the case that you want to sell it later.

Concrete is among the most durable and enduring materials used for residential and commercial flooring. It has many positive and beneficial qualities, including longevity, strength, versatility, and dependability. But as property owners, we must understand that all concrete flooring will eventually require some form of maintenance, and perhaps even some repair. Although this is the inevitable truth about concrete floors, it shouldn’t change your mind about keeping them. Concrete Resurfacing

Concrete resurfacing is a process that restores concrete flooring back into a functional and attractive condition. This is done using polymer-modified overlays, specialized tools, expert techniques, and a wide variety of colors, textures, and patterns. It reverses signs of aging, such as discoloration, cracking, fissures, crumbling, and other surface blemishes and imperfections. Rather than demolishing and replacing concrete floors entirely, property owners can choose to outsource concrete resurfacing services as a cost-effective and efficient alternative.

It saves money, reduces labor, conserves resources, and eliminates disposal obstacles. This is advantageous for homeowners, business owners, and real estate owners alike. And with improved concrete flooring, the overall value of your home is protected, and can even increase! Concrete surfaces like kitchen floors, basement floors, garage floors, hardscaping, patios, porches, fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, driveways, and more are all perfect candidates for resurfacing.

Checking for Signs of Concrete Aging

When your concrete floors are showing signs of aging, it is easy to see. There are some common indications that suggest it’s time to have your concrete floors resurfaced professionally. Here’s what to look for:

Cracks – Tiny, hairline cracks in concrete is perfectly normal, and even expected. It is simply a result of the drying and curing process. But if your concrete floors are exhibiting moderate to large cracks, or excessive fracturing, then it is time to have it resurfaced. This is especially necessary if the damages are taking place near joints, areas with moisture, areas of high traffic, or areas connected to other concrete foundations. Sometimes the cracks simply need refilled, but most often, a full resurfacing job renders the best outcomes.

Flaking – Flaking and chipping is a tell-tale indication that your concrete floors are old or worn. When concrete is breaking away in thin layers like this, it usually means the initial pouring process was sub-par in some way. The results are a dusty and uneven surface that worsens as inclement weather and traffic continue.

Spalling – The term “spalling” refers to the unraveling and bump formation in old concrete flooring and foundations. This is a common occurrence in areas near joints where heavy machinery often passes over. Large bumps and deep crevices are formed as a result of the continued heavy traffic, and concrete slowly begins to unravel. Spalling not only slows down operations and causes exponential damages, it poses a safety concern.

Pitting – Pitting can be described as deep dents in concrete floors. Often times, these dents are caused by dropping heavy equipment on warehouse floors, but pitting also occurs from weaknesses in their material makeup. Concrete pitting gets worse overtime, much like all other damages, and will continue to deteriorate and corrode until it is resurfaced. It is also a safety concern.

How to Properly Take Care of Your Newly Stained Concrete

Concrete staining is an up-and-coming, cost-effective trend for home flooring renovations and remodels. Countertops, fire pits, and various other hardscapes make a perfect canvas for concrete staining too! But even though stained concrete is permanent, and won’t chip or flake off like paint, it will still need a certain level of care to maintain its luster and shine. That is because concrete stains only penetrate the first few layers of concrete; and after some time, these stains can fade as a result of natural environmental exposure. For this reason, it is important to know just how much care your stained concrete requires for long-lasting beauty and optimal performance.

Concrete Staining Maintenance

The first defense against natural wear and tear for stained concrete is sealcoating. A seal coat is an invisible layer of protection that slows the process of fading and discoloration. Sealcoating is the last step of the stained concrete process, and carried out by a trained professional. After a few years, you will need to contact your stained concrete contractor for a fresh sealcoat job.

Generally, stained concrete will need a new sealcoat every 1 to 3 years, depending on location, region, climate, and several other factors. Your contractor can give you all the details you need to care for your stained concrete for years to come. They have the knowledge and experience to assess the individual characteristics of your stained concrete and recommend a care plan that fits its needs.

On-Going Concrete Care Tips:

➤ Every 1 to 2 years, have interior and exterior concrete floors re-sealed.
➤ Regularly sweep and mop interior stained concrete.
➤ Use a chemical-free cleanser for wet mopping.
➤ Use floor mats and rugs for high-traffic areas, like doorways and walkways.
➤ Dry sweep exterior floors regularly using a soft-bristled broom or leaf blower.
➤ Periodically rinse exterior concrete with a garden hose.
➤ Remove tough grime with a soft bristled brush and mild chemical-free cleaner.
➤ Immediately repair any damages to prevent worsening or corrosion.

Everything You Need to Know About Stamped Concrete Care

You’ve mostly likely seen stamped concrete before, whether at the mall, your favorite restaurant, or your friend’s new home.  It is so versatile, easily and affordably mimicking higher end materials like brick, stone, hardwood, and even marble! Stamped concrete is a very popular choice for flooring, patios, and driveways because it is visually appealing, functional, cost-effective, long-lasting, and low maintenance. Caring for Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete can be imprinted, impressed, engraved, and colored to resemble an infinite array of designs, textures, and styles. This is just one reason why this type of flooring is considered such an important asset to a home or property. In order to maintain quality and performance, you simply need to make the time. Start with daily dirt removal. Use a leaf blower, broom, or vacuum to remove dirt, debris, and other solid particles from your floors. You should also rinse with clean water on a weekly basis to reduce grime and residue accumulation.

Also be sure to stay on top of stain removal. If your flooring or foundation has scuff marks, stains, or oil spots, it is important to remove them as soon as possible. Never allow stains, dirt, or debris to sit for long periods of time on stamped concrete. It is important to have stamped concrete seal coated to provide an extra layer of protection against dirt and damage. Routine seal coating also protects against freeze-thaw cycles, expansion, buckling, moisture, and de-icing chemicals.

It is important to hire a professional concrete contractor for stamped concrete installation and sealcoating services. They have the experience, equipment, knowledge, and resources to provide accurate and safe service you can trust. Just be sure to choose a company that is licensed and experienced, and can offer estimates and advice anytime.

Should I Reseal My Stamped Concrete Patio Myself?

After a few years, your stamped concrete patio can begin to show signs of sealant deterioration. As concrete sealer wears off, it can cause stamped concrete to appear faded, blemished, or discolored. Since your decorative concrete patio is a valuable investment, it is important to reseal it every few years to ensure long-lasting appeal and protection.

New sealant will instantly restore the look and luster of your concrete patio, delivering immediate results and satisfaction. But should you reseal your patio on your own? When you imagine the process, it seems like an easy task; but the truth is, if resealing is not implemented properly, it can actually make your worn concrete patio look worse.

Continue reading to learn about some common sealant mistakes, and why you should reconsider taking on the job by yourself.

Indianapolis Stamped Concrete Service
Indianapolis Stamped Concrete Service 317-454-3612

Common Concrete Sealing Mistakes

When a resealing job is not done properly, it can make a stamped concrete patio look worse than it was before. Sealers for concrete are specially manufactured to be applied in thin layers. Although the amounts vary depending on the type of sealer, all concrete sealers come with manufacturer specification labels that tells you how many square feet per gallon of coverage to use.

For example, if the manufacturer label says 400 square feet per gallon, then that is exactly the amount that should be used. Do not use 300 square feet per gallon to achieve a thicker layer. Many people make the mistake of thinking that a thicker layer is better than the manufacturer’s suggestion. But this is wrong. Thicker is not better when it comes to sealer; it just doesn’t work that way.

Using Solvent or Water-Based Acrylic Sealers

Exterior decorative concrete should be sealed with solvent or water-based acrylic products. These sealers are specially designed for outdoor concrete protection because they allow moisture vapor to penetrate through them. Too much sealer would restrict this ability, thus causing too much moisture to get trapped in the surface. This scenario is a common cause for concrete discoloration like blushing, blurring, or whiting.

What You Should Do Instead

If your stamped concrete patio has had too much sealer applied to it, applying more on top will not make it better. Whether you have already made a sealer mistake or you still need to reseal your patio, using a professional stamped concrete contractor is your best option for success. They have the proper knowledge, skills, tools, and equipment to properly reseal your stamped concrete patio in no time at all.

What You Need to Know About Cubic Yard Calculations

Imagine a box that is 1 yard high, 1 yard wide, and 1 yard deep. Now imagine that the space inside is filled with liquid. Right now, you are imagining the exact measurement of one cubic yard, it is the volume. Essentially, you can remember a cubic yard as a cube that measures 1 yard in all directions. If you are doing any sort of construction work, such as carpentry, masonry, or remodeling, it is important to understand how to measure cubic yards accurately.

Continue reading to learn what you need to know about cubic yard calculations, starting with common materials that are typically measured with this system.

Indianapolis Handyman and Remodeling Services 317-454-3612
Indianapolis Handyman and Remodeling Services 317-454-3612

A cubic yard is the volume of space or mass that fits inside a space that measures one yard wide, by one yard deep, by one yard high. Cubic yards are used frequently to measure all sorts of materials. Some of the most common materials and projects measured in cubic yards include concrete, mulch, soil, compost, gardens, patios, pools, parking lots, and more.

Measuring in Cubic Yards

In order to properly measure your needed materials in cubic yards, all dimensions must be converted into the same measurements first. Here are the basic increments you need to know to do this correctly:

1 Cubic Yard = 27 Cubic Feet (3’ x 3’ x 3’)

1 Cubic Yard = 46,656 Cubic Inches (36” x 36” x 36”)

As an example of how to apply this math, imagine that you are on the market for enough concrete to fill a slab that is 6 inches thick, 12 feet long, and 12 feet wide.

In order to calculate how much concrete material you will need, you must first convert everything to a common dimension. In this case, feet would work best. This means that 6 inches would convert to ½ a foot, or 0.5 feet, and the rest would stay the same.

Then you would simply multiply all three values together to find the number of cubic feet, like this:

0.5 x 12 x 12 = 72 Cubic Feet

Continue by dividing the answer to the above equation (72 cu. ft.) by the number of cubic feet in a cubic yard (27 feet) to get the right amount of material you need in cubic yards, like this:

72 ÷ 27 = 2.67 Cubic Yards

SOLUTION: You’ll need 2.67 Cubic Yards of concrete to fill your slab!

Choose Stamped Concrete Over Natural Stone for Your Patio

Now that fall is right around the corner, it is time to put those thoughts you’ve had for a new patio into action so that you and your family can finally enjoy the cool weather, and perhaps even a toasty fire pit, this season. There are various options for patios, and from those options, most homeowners tend to lean toward higher-end looks and materials, such as natural stone. But there are hidden setbacks with these kinds of materials, especially natural stone, and homeowners are often stuck with the consequences in as early as the first year.

If you love the look of natural stone, and you are considering it for your new patio, you may want to take some more time to learn all of your options before making such an important investment. Stamped concrete is a cost-effective, low-maintenance alternative to natural stone, and offers a wide range of benefits that are unparalleled in the patio market.

☑ Versatility

Stamped concrete is a wonderful alternative to any higher-end material because it can be artistically designed to mimic anything, from granite, sand, and stone, to pavers, bricks, marble, and more! ☑ Cost

Stamped concrete is much cheaper than natural stone. It is also cheaper to install and maintain. But this does not mean it looks cheaper. Remember, stamped concrete can indistinguishably mimic any other material, flawlessly.

☑ Installation and Maintenance

The installation process for stamped concrete is much less invasive. It requires less labor and less demolition. Not only is stamped concrete easier to install, it is also low maintenance. It is a highly-durable material that lasts for many years. This is why it is less expensive to maintain compared to natural stone and other high end materials.

☑ Long-Lasting Performance and Beauty
