Are you planning on having any type of roof repair or
maintenance done soon? If so, it is wise to avoid roofing companies that
subcontract their work. There are countless disadvantages to hiring such
companies, from minor aggravating issues to major financial downfalls. However,
the top three reasons why you should not hire a roofer who contracts out their duties
have to do with accountability, uncertainty, and postponements.
Continue reading to learn how these three disadvantages can
come into play when working with a roofer who commissions their roofing work.
✅ Accountability
Insurance and workmanship liability are two vital factors in
choosing any type of contractor to perform any type of work on your property.
When it comes to roof work, this is especially important. A roofer who
subcontracts work leaves you at risk of being liable for injuries or damages,
as well as, any structural errors made on the job.
✅ Uncertainty
There is a vast degree of uncertainly involved on your end when
a roofer subcontracts their work, so you don’t know what you are getting in
terms of certification, skill, dependability, and liability. Although you did
your research to find a roofer of your choice, you have no idea who is behind
the work they subcontract.
✅ Postponements
Roofing contractors who outsource their work to other
contractors are often known for project delays and postponements. A roof repair
or replacement that is projected to take a few weeks can end up taking several
months or more as a result of your roofer poorly coordinating and managing
their selected subcontractors.
How to Find a Reliable Roofer
The fundamental attributes of any roofing contractor is
licensing, insurance, and experience. These three aspects are among the most
important because they indicate that the contractors are adept professionals
who specialize in roofing service. Top insurance coverage is equally important
so that homeowners are never liable for any accidents or injuries that may
occur on the job. But aside from these baseline attributes, finding a quality
roofing contractor requires that you look for more. See out blog, “Tips for
Hiring a Reputable Roofer” for a great place to get started.

When it comes to home renovations and handyman projects involving wood, nails and screws are staple supplies to have on hand. But how do you know which one to use and when? Although the debate is ongoing, there are some facts and considerations that can help you decide which fastener is best for your particular home improvement application.
Continue reading to learn a few pointers for choosing between a nail and a screw, as well as, what to do if you are stuck making progress on your home repair or project.
Nails or Screws?
The truth is, both nails and screws are excellent fasteners
for wood so they can usually be incorporated interchangeably. So long as you
size your unit correctly and install it properly, you should have success with
either one. Ultimately, the unit you choose to use on your particular
application depends on personal preference and availability of tools and supplies.
First, consider how strong and lasting you need the connection
to be. Screws are stronger by nature of installation, and therefore, are good
choices for heavy or large items, such as drywall. Nails are slimmer, but come
in very long size variations, making them good choices for aesthetic applications,
thinner materials, and lightweight items like picture frames.
Next, think about the tools you have on hand. You want to
match the type of screw or nail with the proper tool. If you only have a
hammer, you may want to stick with nails, but if you have a power drill or
screw driver, you can choose screws. Likewise, if you only have a Philips Head
screw driver, you would need to use Philips screws. Phillips screws deliver a tighter
fit compared to flat head screws, making them more popular among factories and
handymen.
Third, take into consideration the size and shape of your wooden
building materials. Screws tend to have more tensile strength, while nails have
shear strength. Nails, although can
bend under pressure, are quite strong and rarely snap. Screws are more brittle,
but they connect wooden boards together, tighter and stronger. Screws also work
better with wood’s natural structural propensity to expand and contract.
Common Nail Applications:
▻ Roof and Wall Framing ▻ Plywood Sheathing ▻ Hardwood Floors ▻ Siding/Roofing ▻ Interior Moldings ▻ Solid-Wood Edgings for Plywood Shelves ▻ Stiles and Rails for Cabinets ▻ And anywhere else you don’t want to damage wood with a screw.
Common Screw Applications:
▻ Drywall Hanging ▻ Wood Deck Fastening ▻ Cabinet Installation ▻ Wooden Toys ▻ Bookcases ▻ And any other wooden connection that you wish to take apart.

Concrete pool decks are a wonderful option because they provide both beauty and function. Choosing a cooler, lighter colored pool deck is a wise choice for sensitive feet in the hot sun, while opting for a textured stamped pool deck can provide added traction and reduce slipping accidents. Not only do concrete pool decks offer safety and performance, they also offer an unparalleled level of beauty with the vast array of custom styles available. Furthermore, they are inexpensive, easy to install, long-lasting, and low maintenance! But overtime, concrete will begin to show signs of wear and tear, and thus, require a certain degree of maintenance or repair.
Continue reading to learn what you can do to improve the
look and performance of your concrete pool deck.
Concrete Resurfacing
Damages like cracking, splitting, and scaling can be remedied with professional concrete resurfacing. This type of concrete resurfacing project can be accomplished with a concrete overlay or micro-topping, depending on the size and existing condition. This is a lucrative option since it effectively covers blemishes and provides a fresh surface to paint, color, or add texture.
Concrete Etching
Concrete etching is a custom service that can both restore
and enhance the look of a concrete pool deck. It is a suitable option for pool
decks showing signs of discoloration, fading, and minor cracking. By engraving
a pattern into the concrete pool deck, cracks and blemishes can be intentionally
disguised. The process starts with concrete coloring, and then finishes using a
special routing machine that cuts faux grout lines.
Concrete Recoloring
To cover ghastly blemishes, like stains, fading, and
discoloration, concrete recoloring is the perfect method. Simply applying fresh
color to a concrete pool deck will enhance the appearance and cover unsightly
imperfections. This service can be achieved using concrete stains, color
hardeners, integral pigments, and other coloring methods.

perfect for your home!
? Outdoor Living Space Remodels
If you are a lover of the outdoors, and spend much of your
time in the family’s’ outside living areas, then you most certainly want to
look into upgrading your existing deck, patio, or porch. There are several
quick and affordable enhancements you can make to these areas, including
stamped and stained outdoor concrete terraces. You can choose to extend the
deck or patio to make it larger, perhaps adding a functional gazebo or awning,
or even some built-in benches or posts, tables, bridges, or pathways. You can
also want to consider replacing and remodeling your patio or deck altogether.
Not only will this increase your home’s value, it will add more square footage
the available living space.
? Rubber Roof Installation
A new and popular option for residential roofing is called
rubber roofing. And now is the time to have your roof replaced if it is old or
in poor condition. Not only is rubber roofing easy and quick to install, it
lasts much longer than traditional asphalt shingles. It is also easy to manage
since it doesn’t require extensive on-going maintenance. Rubber roofing is
virtually customizable too since it comes in a countless variety of colors and
styles. It protects against inclement weather, rain, water leaks, and drafts,
making it a cost-effective option for homeowners.
? Door Replacement
Most modern houses have more than one door that exits to the
outside. For this reason, doors play a major role in the curb appeal of a home.
Of course they also play a large role in energy efficiency, draft protection,
and more. This time of year is a perfect opportunity to have your exterior
doors and storm doors replaced. You can choose from modern designs, colors, and
styles that better match the look and feel of your home. It may sound like an
insignificant change, but a front door or side door upgrade makes a huge
different aesthetically. You’ll be glad you did!
? Exterior Painting
When it comes to upgrading the look and feel of your home, nothing works more instantaneously than a fresh coat of paint. Re-painting the exterior of your home can instantly give your property a new and improved look. Quality exterior paint contains high-value pigments, additives, and resins. When looking, simply choose a 100% Acrylic Latex paint, and you are sure to choose wisely. The all-acrylic formulations are most popular and high quality. They stick to anything, including wood, vinyl, masonry, and metal. Steer clear of acrylic blends and vinyl resins.

When you decide to get a new puppy, you are bringing home more than just a pet; you’re bringing home a new member of the family that will be there with you for years to come. For this reason, why not upgrade or convert particular areas of your home to meet the needs of your new dog, as well as, make life more convenient for the rest of the family? Many homeowners have chosen this route, which has proven to reap certain benefits, including puppy cleanup, penning, and even property value!
Continue reading to learn some of the top recommended renovations to have done when adding a pup to the family.
? Doggy Door
Although it may be obvious, one of the greatest and simplest
additions you can make for your new puppy is a doggy doors. You have two primary
options to choose from when it comes to doggy doors; you can buy a kit and install
it in an existing door, or you can purchase an entire door manufactured with a
doggy door in it. Both types will range in price, quality, size, dimensions, retailers,
and more. Installing such doors can be very tricky, and if not done properly,
can be unsafe. So it is strongly recommended to pass on the duty to a trained
handyman.
? Floor Replacement
With a potty trained pup, you might not need to worry so
much about your carpets. However, most pups do not come pre-potty trained, which
means you and the rest of the family will have to ride the learning curve along
with your new friend. In order to maintain a hygienic and comfortable interior
environment, and sanity for that matter, you should consider ripping out your
carpets and installing wood, laminate, or tile floors. Hard-surfaced floors
like these are much easier to clean, and retain their quality and appeal for a
lot longer than carpet. Rather than replacing all of the carpet in your home,
you can simply appoint a common room, and change it to another flooring
material.
? Backyard Fencing
If you have a dog, it will likely want some room to run
around and exert energy; otherwise, you can find yourself with an anxious,
poorly behaved dog. One way to provide this privilege without jeopardizing safety
is to install a property fence. There are infinite materials, styles, and
designs to choose from when it comes to installing a backyard fence. You can
even have your fence customized to match your home. Rather than adding a
full-property fence, you can simply fence in a small area of the yard.

Painting is a tedious and delicate project that requires a certain degree of organization, commitment, and technique. Professional painting crews make all of these qualities look as if they come easy, but we novice painters know this to be untrue. There are many techniques and methods that professional painters use to achieve those flawless and rich results we are so fondly jealous of. Fortunately, you too can learn some of these professional painting tips that would never otherwise be revealed!
Continue reading to learn the secrets to achieving a professional-grade paint job, and make your next interior project your best yet!
Painter’s Tape
When you tape up baseboards before painting, it can seem
like a pretty straightforward task. Apply the tape so that the woodwork is
covered and move on; right? Well, many times, after the painting is finished
and the tape is removed, you can find streaks or drops that managed to seep
their way through. To avoid this, do what the pro’s do and use a putty knife to
apply the painting tape on baseboards and molding. Press the knife against the
tape to ensure a thorough seal. This prevents any paint from getting through.
Hole-Patching and Sanding
One of the most important steps to painting is preparation.
Preparation of course includes choosing the proper paint, deciding on a color,
purchasing needed supplies, and laying out protective drop canvas for flooring
and furniture. But when we mentioned preparation in terms of what the
professionals suggest, we mean hole-patching and sanding. All holes and deficits should be filled in
with a joint-compound patching product, smoothed down evenly, and allowed to
dry completely. Once these areas of dry, you can sand away all the uneven
surfaces.
It is vital to sand away any surface flaws, like spackle,
joint-compound patches, nicks, nail holes, scores, scratches, chips, and more
the best you can. Do this using a fine grit sandpaper and sanding pole. The
fine grit will protect your walls from over-sanding, while the pole will allow
you to reach all the way to the high walls and ceiling. Sand baseboards,
molding, walls, and more to get an even smooth surface. Once you have an even
and smooth surface, you can move forward with your painting project.
Paint and Primer
When joint compound is painted over, it can sometimes absorb
all the moisture from the paint and leave a duller, discolored look. This makes
all the patched areas on a wall noticeable. To avoid this problem, which
professionals refer to as “flashing”, be sure to apply a primer to your walls
before painting. But to paint like a professional, don’t just use any primer,
use a tinted primer. Although white primer is acceptable and frequently used,
professionals typically use a gray-colored primer, or a primer that is close to
the color of the finishing paint. This covers patched areas and existing paint
better than plain white or ivory primers. This results in a more vibrant finish
and less applications.
Paint Boxing
Although you can purchase the same color in five cans, it is
not guaranteed that all five cans will look exactly the same. This can be
evident in a paint job when a new container is opened halfway through painting.
It can result in a different color tones on a wall. To avoid this, professionals
“box” their paint by pouring all cans into one large bucket to achieve one
consistent color.
Paint Application
Ever wonder why a self-paint job looks streaky and a
professional’s is always smooth and even? Well the secret is adding a paint
extender or paint conditioner into your paint. Popular products, like Floetrol,
are designed to slow down the drying process of the paint, allowing a more even
application and finish. Not only do paint extenders hide brush strokes, they
also eliminate dark lap marks from painting over semi-dried paint.
Ceilings
When ceilings are textured or bumpy, it can be virtually
impossible to paint a clean line between the wall and the ceiling. For this
reason, professionals will use a screwdriver to scrape a ridge along the edge
of the walls and ceiling. This creates a platform for painting a smooth
straight line between ceiling and wall and prevents paint from sticking to
ceiling bumps. The resulting ridge should be fine enough so that the lost
texture is never noticed, but wide enough for brush bristles to fit.

Planning a home renovation or remodel? Set yourself apart
from other properties by adding in some fresh, unique, and space-saving door designs
inside the home! Continue reading to learn some popular interior doors styles
that are topping the residential market trends this year, as well as, who to
call for expert home remodeling and general contracting services near you.
Although you can opt for the traditional, 4 to 6 panel door design in your home, there are several other options that may be better choices, not to mention more stylish! These new interior door options can eliminate the standard monotony found in last season property styles.
Here are 5 top-recommended door designs to consider for your upcoming home renovation:
Pocket Doors
Pocket doors are doors that hide inside the wall of the door
frame, and then slide open and closed. They stem from the vintage design, which
was often seen in older homes due to their much smaller quarters back then. That
is because pocket doors happen to be excellent space-savers, especially for
small areas and rooms. And with newer, more innovative designs, they are now
stylish too! From tiny bathrooms and tight hallways, to regular room-to-room
entry ways, pocket doors are the perfect solution for style and space.
Dutch Doors
Dutch doors are fun, stylish, and best of all, useful. They
appear as a standard full-sized door, but really, they are cut in half and designed
to open at the top. You can choose to open just the top portion of the door, or
you can open the door as a whole. These are highly recommended for interior-exterior
entry ways, mud rooms, laundry rooms, and children’s rooms.
Barn Doors
Barn doors, also known as “farm” doors, are seen more and
more these days, and for good reasons. Not only are they very chic and trendy,
they are quite functional. They save space, much like pocket doors, but because
they rest on the outside of the wall, they can also jazz up the interior of any
room, even becoming a focal point! Furthermore, barn doors are easy to install,
and most door way systems can fit them.
Sliding Doors
When you combine a pocket door with a barn door, you get a
sliding door system. Think of your patio sliding doors; sliding doors can now
be stylishly incorporated inside the home. A popular place to consider adding
sliding doors is the master bathroom. You can add a trendy focal point with mahogany
or glass sliding doors that separate the master bedroom from the on-suite
bathroom. Sliding doors are also great for finished basements, home gyms, and
sun rooms.
Bifold/Accordion Doors
Glass bifold doors and French accordion doors are similar door
systems, and both very trendy options for home remodels. Glass bifold doors are
designed as two vertical panels that fold into one another when you close them
shut. In today’s market, these old-fashioned door systems have been updated to
look stylish and serve as space savers for small areas and rooms. French
accordion doors are very similar to bifold systems, but they have more panels
and attach to both sides of a door frame. They are great options for master bedrooms
and bathrooms, as well as, great room dividers.
